How a visit to Sainsburys turned into a seriously successful business!

Sometimes luck and chance can play a big role in entrepreneurial success. Like, for example, the time when I was shopping at Sainsbury’s one Saturday afternoon and I bumped into an old family friend. We exchanged the usual pleasantries but it was very obvious to me that something wasn’t quite right. ‘What’s up mate?’ I asked ‘it looks like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.’

In the next 10 minutes (as we wandered up and down the fruit and veg isle) he told me what was on his mind.

Everything was changing at work he told me – the boss was putting the business up for sale and he was feeling very uncomfortable about the situation and more than a little uncertain about the future and how the change in ownership might affect him.

“My boss has even suggested I buy the business” he said, raising his eyebrows.

“Why not?” I asked.

“I haven’t got that type of money” he said “and even if I did, I don’t even know if I could run a business”.

48 hours after that chance conversation I was pleased to be able to call him with the good news – we were able to raise the money through our banking connections and the business could be his if he wanted it!

With our support and encouragement he was able to confidently proceed with the purchase of the business… and a new career as an entrepreneur.

That was 13 years ago. Since then he has gone on to open a second branch and been able to buy several investment properties with the profits from his business.

This is one of many cases where, through our support and encouragement, someone has been able to make the transition from employee to business owner and realise their true potential.
